About Chef Julianna

Chef Julianna, that’s me!  I am a long-time foodie and collector of cookbooks.  My daytime job is that of an educator in a very busy high school, so most of my cooking is done on weekends and holidays. My greatest joy is to travel the world, experience various cultures through food, and to bring home my treasured recipes to try out on friends!  My recipe box is full of dishes like, “Maher’s Mom’s Green Beans” from a trip to Egypt or Kai Pad Phet from a cooking school in Luang Prabang, Laos.  Much of my globe-trotting has been in Asia, so my favourite recipes often reflect this. I have also been following food and health trends for as long as I can remember.  It all started with “gourmet cooking” when I was yet in high school.  My best friend’s mom introduced me to things that weren’t generally eaten in my home – things like Quiche Lorraine and Coq au Vin. Then in my 20’s, T. and I cooked up a storm for our dinner parties using Diane Clement’s “Chef on the Run” and Gourmet magazines.  I have flirted with no fat cooking, vegetarian cooking, wokking, and much more, all the way through the decades to our current trends of fresh, healthy and local.  The bottom line is that I have always enjoyed the creative aspect of preparing a sensational meal for friends and family.  I have found that it brings us together on so many levels. After all it’s the one thing that every human on the planet has in common – we all love to eat!

About me as a food photographer: please be patient with me as I learn this new craft.  I have always taken pictures of food, but staring at all the professional images we see on the internet today, and in the polished food journalism cookbooks that have flooded the market has raised the bar! I will be playing with this digital art and in time, hope to capture some mouth-watering shots of my recipes.

Thanks so much Ken! I really appreciate the encouragement! Having just started blogging, there is a lot to learn at once. It can be a bit overwhelming actually, but I figure that as long as we are having fun, that’s all that matters! Oh and I love your blog, by the way – your photographs are awesome! Cheers!

Yes, travelling certainly opens up our cooking repertoire and it’s nice to meet someone who has had the same experience. About the pics…I am laughing – I am really only learning too and working away at it, but it is fun and so that spurs me on! Have a lovely week and I can’t wait to visit your blog again soon!

Thanks for the like on my Lemon Coconut Cookies post. Thrilled to discover your blog which is beautiful. I have a ways to go on that score! Lol. I can relate to needing to learn the photography stuff a bit better! I’m guessing reading your cookbook list that you are a fellow Canadian?

My pleasure! I absolutely love the combo of lemon and coconut, so I know I would love these cookies! And I noticed that they are from a Bonnie Stern cookbook – one of my favourite cookbook authors! Yes, I am Canadian too – from BC, how about you?

Hi Julianna – I suddenly realised that I hadn’t read this – what an interesting background to your cooking! It’s funny how we have gone from recipe cards, clippings, notebooks and frenzied scratchings on the telephone to blogging! I assume that you have come a long way in your photography skills since you wrote this as your photos are always superb!

Hi Jhuls. Thanks so much for the nomination for this award. You are so very kind to think of me and I really appreciate it. I just wanted to let you know that Indu nominated me for the same award in April and I accepted it. I’m never really sure how these awards work, but do you want to nominate a person who hasn’t got that award yet? No matter what, thanks a bunch! 😀

      • chefjulianna

Really, I think we are all just inspiring each other :-). You should see what I’m doing in my kitchen as we speak :/ Sure glad that blogging isn’t live 😉 Can you just imagine?

      • Arl's World

What a hilarious thought, you are so funny! I am setting at my desk at work and a smile just broke across my face. One of the engineers looked at me quite funny. Hehe 🙂 If blogging were live and in my kitchen it would be a seen from the “I Love Lucy Show” Ha! And you are so correct about all of us inspiring each other. Guess I better get back to work. 😉

      • chefjulianna

Yes, I Love Lucy would describe many of the scenes in my kitchen too!! 😀 Haha, but I think all of us sneak a bit of blog checking into our workday! 🙂

[…] My recipe is not really a recipe – just an illustration that these pods can be eaten and are very tasty. The last few days I have been cooking, but not so much my own recipes as several of the super dishes presented at last week’s Fiesta Friday #24, so all I have to bring this week to Fiesta Friday #25 is this simple but delicious dish of vegetables with lily buds. I will be co-hosting again this week, this time with my fellow-Canadian Chef Julianna from Foodie on Board. […]

So cool that you’ve been to Luang Prabang too – it’s such a cool town, isn’t it? Did you get woken up every morning at 4am (or thereabouts) by the drums at the temple? We were almost next to it, so there was no getting away from them! LOL!

How long were you there for? Also, where else in Asia have you been? We could compare notes!

So happy to have found your blog!
